Meet Your PALs

Introducing the faces behind the flood of emails and behind every Peer Advising event!

Matin: Matin is a third year building student from the School of Design and Environment. He went on exchange to Georgia Tech during the fall of 2010 and ever since has been bearing dreams of returning to the States. His nothing-short-of-awesome experience during his exchange spurred him to make Singapore a welcoming city for international students. He draws much of his inspiration for his works from shows, music and art. He hopes to bring a fresh and funky perspective to the Peer Advising Programme. Oh and by the way, he's a Gleek!

Jake: Jake is double majoring in Electrical Engineering and Engineering Systems within the Faculty of Engineering. A passion for getting to know more people, experiencing diverse cultures, and challenging himself in a different environment pushed him out of Singapore for a semester on student exchange to the Royal Institute of Technology, KTH in Stockholm, Sweden. Even though he is back at NUS, he continues to dream of those incredible days. To him, being part of the Peer Advising Programme not only allows him to make friends, have fun and offer assistance to outgoing and incoming exchange students, it is also a very good way to enhance your university life and make it different from others.

Bridget: Bridget is a nomad cleverly disguised as a Chemistry student. Her not-so-secret ambition is to move to South America and be a street busker playing the accordion or selling street food. This dream was born out of her love for travel and the many street buskers and street hawkers that have entertained, befriended and nourished her. She was privileged to be given the opportunity to spend a summer in Mexico, a semester in India followed by another in the USA. These study abroad experiences have changed her life and enriched it so much that she wants others to have the same experience. This goal to help others was the impetus behind her joining the Peer Advising Programme.

Ivan: Ivan is a fourth-year Political Science student from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.  Being a little tired of the warm weather in Singapore, he headed to the wintry mountains of Pennsylvania to take a look around. Despite a minor case of frostbite and almost being run over by a truck (kids, remember that Americans drive on the wrong side of the road), he came back in one piece and was raring to share his experience. He is still suffering from a mild case of ‘post-exchange blues’ and is currently addicted to sports played with balls that are not round. He hopes to bring his enthusiasm and love for travel to help enrich the Peer Advising Programme and make university life that much better.

Kenneth: Kenneth went on an exchange to Lund University, Sweden and since then has been craving  some fermented herring (nooo) and semla. The hospitality of both the Swedish and the international community at Lund has very much inspired him to make a similar contribution towards creating an awesome experience for incoming exchange students! Kenneth loves immersing in different cultures and of course, travelling. More specifically he likes capturing epic landscapes from all over! In school though, he is a rather mild creature majoring in History, and with an interest in religions. And just so you know, he couchsurfs (and host!)

Hiu Yan: Hiu Yan is a fourth year student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, majoring in History and Economics.  Her interest in Chinese history developed after taking a Chinese history module during her second year of studies. This eventually prompted her to go on a semester exchange to Nankai University in Tianjin, China. Her exchange semester proved to be a most fruitful and exciting one as she had the interesting experience of standing on trains for more than 12 hours and enduring a sandstorm, amongst many other events! At the end of a semester with interesting modules, meeting new people, travelling around, and learning the essential skill of ‘price negotiation’, she settled back into NUS with the Peer Advising Programme where she aims to convince more students to go on exchange to China.
