International Summer Programmes (i-SP)

Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU) International Summer Programme


What is this program about?

The Summer Program will give more time to students to experience Cantonese culture and master Mandarin speaking and listening skills. Students from various cultural backgrounds will be recruited and studying in the same classroom. SYSU will provide a cross-disciplinary, cross-culture and cross-border atmosphere and colorful campus cultural activities for ISP students to broaden their international horizon and enhance their international competences.

What is the academic content?

Classes will be held from Monday to Thursday for a three-week period. The language courses (entry level Putonghua) will be scheduled in the morning. Lectures in English focusing on topics such as Chinese economics and culture as well as cultural activities will be held in the afternoons. Field trips to local enterprises will be organised on Fridays to further the students’ understanding of the Chinese culture and economy.

All courses will be taught in English.

Two courses will be offered as part of the ISP: Chinese Language Study & Cultural Experiences and Chinese Politics, Economics & Culture Studies. All courses will be taught in English.

Course II: Chinese Politics, Economics & Cultural Studies

SYSU has organized excellent professors to give 12 lectures in the afternoon. The content is various and trying to give a full picture of the current China in different aspects.

Academic credit MAY be available. Credit for the programme is strictly at the student’s discretion. Students interested in obtaining credit must work with their faculty for credit mapping. IRO does not apply for credit transfer on the students’ behalf.

Is financial assistance available?

Yes. Students can apply for a study travel grant from the International Relations Office.


Number of placements available?

The figure varies from year to year as it depends on the exchange numbers.


What are the eligibility requirements?

 
  • NUS undergraduates from any faculty who have completed at least one year of study at NUS prior to participating in this programme.
  • Students should not be in their graduating semester prior to participating in this programme.
  • CAP of 3.0 and above.
  • Students must not be a Chinese national.

 


Is a visa required?

Yes. SYSU will assist in providing documentation needed to apply for a visa.

Students are to consult the Embassy of China in Singapore to determine if a visa is required and to apply for an entry visa if needed.
